1. PRE-RETIREMENT

Entire career was in the nuclear industry, 11 years in the UK followed by .30 years in the US.

  • Member of design team for first commercial power reactors in the UK
  • Deputy Head of Reactor Physics at operational nuclear plant
  • Managed licensing activities for $3.5 Billion project [Clinch River Breeder Reactor]
  • Task Manager for design and procurement of equipment to remove damaged fuel following meltdown at Three Mile Island
  • Vice-President/Regional Manager for Bechtel Oak Ridge, Tennessee
  • Senior Vice-President for $2Billion business line for BNFL, based in Washington

2. POST- RETIREMENT

2.1 NON- ROTARY

Four years as Chairman of Alexandria Community Services Board [ACSB]. The ACSB overviews the 300 person Dept. of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and  Substance Abuse.

  • Attained funding and approval for new psycho- social clubhouse, now operating and serving 150
  • Commenced program for Safe Haven for homeless of Alexandria
  • Attained “CARF” three year certification for ACSB on first attempt. Normally certification is for 1 year, 3 year certification is reserved for exceptional programs

Co- Chair of Virginia Association of Community Services Boards Public Policy Committee

  • Initiated and took to completion a Statewide resolution requiring the first increase in State taxes on tobacco products in over 30 years, which has since become State law in Virginia, a tobacco producing State

Member of Task Force, appointed by the Mayor, for citizen oversight of the construction of the$2.6 M Woodrow Wilson Bridge

2.2 ROTARY

2 years as International Service Director for District 7620, covering 69 clubs and 3000 members
First District Grants Committee Chair for District 7620
Recipient of District International Service Award
Major Donor and Multiple Paul Harris awards
 Rotarian of the Year
Chair, World Community Service for Washington Rotary Club

  • Expanded scope of international projects from a starting point of 2 to 3 projects per year to 12 projects including a 3H Grant
  • Director, COANIQUEM BCF [Burned Children Foundation] based in Santiago de Chile
  • Director, Foundation Against HIV/AIDS
  • Director, Washington DC Foundation Board
  • Total value of grants awarded during tenure approaching $1M
